Creation of an animated feature for Sevenstore to present the release of the Peter Saville X Adidas Spezial trainer.The story of the animation traced the scientific origins of the iconic unknown pleasures graphic featured on the shoe. Formed from pulsar readings in the deepest parts of space it revealed a new side to the iconic artwork many aren’t aware of. All assets were applied throughout the store and used on social channels. For this feature I wanted to not explore the most obvious links with the Saville graphic being that it featured on Joy Division’s revered album ‘Unknown Pleasures’. The origins of the graphic instead lie in a series of data plots taken from the first ever neutron star discovered in space. Using a pulsar device this lines were created as the neutron star rotates and eventually faces earth at a rate of around 1.3337 seconds. This story of space, satellites and pulsar devices I felt could really create a beautiful feature which would allow viewers to see a different side to the origins of the graphic from what they initially associate it with. For the art direction I wanted the feature to purely stick to black and white and flick between the two in order to pay a small homage to the ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album which featured a reverse of the graphic on the inner sleeve of the cover. These dramatic lighting scenarios allowed us to use minimal lighting at the start of the feature in order to tease the identity of the trainer and gradually reveal it as the cut scenes told the story of how the graphic came to be formed. For the sound design we wanted to feature sound in the form of a repetitive drum kicks in ode to Joy Division and relating the pulses evidenced in the graphic.
